Excessive Sweating
Axillary Hyperhidrosis
Excessive underarm sweating, also known as axillary hyperhidrosis, can occur even when the body does not need cooling. It may affect confidence, clothing choices, social interactions and day to day comfort. Treatment with prescription wrinkle-relaxing medication can help reduce the activity of the sweat glands in the underarm area.
During treatment, a series of small injections are placed superficially into the skin of the armpit. The medication works by temporarily blocking the chemical signals between the nerves and the sweat glands. As these signals are reduced, sweat production decreases significantly in the treated area.
Most patients begin to notice improvement within approximately 5 to 14 days following treatment, with maximum effect usually developing over the following two weeks. Results commonly last between 4 and 9 months, although duration varies between individuals depending on metabolism, activity levels and severity of sweating.
The aim of treatment is to significantly reduce sweating rather than completely eliminate all moisture. Many patients report improved comfort, reduced clothing staining and increased confidence following treatment.
